The Life and Times of the First Tennesseans

Grades: 4-8

Ever wanted to do an archaeological dig?  With this trunk, your classroom will turn into an archaeology lab. Students will investigate real and replica artifacts from the Mississippian moundbuilders in Tennessee to learn about their rich and complex culture.  What did they eat?  How did they hunt?  What games did they play?  Your students will even have the opportunity to hold and study real pottery sherds made by the hands of a Mississippian Indian over 500 years ago.

Trunk Highlights Include:

  • Real pottery sherds excavated from an archaeological site
  • Chunkey stone (used for playing a Mississippian game)
  • Replica bone fish
  • Replica jewelry
  • Photographs of effigy pottery on display at the Tennessee State Museum
