The Lives of Three Tennessee Slaves and Their Journey Towards Freedom

Grades: 8-12

What was life like as a slave in Tennessee? What was it like to be sold? What lengths would you go through to gain your freedom? These solemn questions and more will be pondered in this trunk. With this trunk, students will explore the lives of three African Americans enslaved in Tennessee during the mid-19th century.

They will understand the trials of living under the ownership of another human being while also examining the steps that each of these individuals took to secure their own freedom and the freedom of their families. These three people are not fictional. They lived real lives in Tennessee, and faced perilous circumstances in slavery and the Civil War. All managed to overcome slavery to secure freedom for either themselves or their loved ones.

To learn about the lives of these courageous individuals, students will create an engaging museum exhibit using the hands-on and primary source materials that will reveal the powerful story of their journey towards freedom.

Trunk Highlights Include:

  • Reproduction slave broadsides
  • Replica artifacts
  • Reproduction slave manacles
