Spring 2017 Lunch & Learn Speaker Series

Our Lunch & Learn series is just what it says—a chance for participants to eat lunch while learning something about Tennessee history at the same time. Whether you bring your lunch in a brown bag or grab a sandwich from a nearby shop, bring it to the museum and enjoy an interesting talk while you eat. The event will last about 30 minutes.

All of the programs are FREE to the public and will take place on Level B of the State Museum in front of the stage.

Off to War: Tennessee soldiers in the First World War

This April marks the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into the First World War. Join us as we recognize some of Tennessee’s famous soldiers, along with some lesser-known names who, together, fought and died in this war that was supposed to end all wars. We will also consider how these Tennesseans are remembered both at home and abroad, ensuring that General John J. Pershing’s words ring true: “Time will not dim the glory of their deeds.”

Tennessee’s Epic Epidemics

The history of epidemic disease is the history of the world. Tennessee itself has been shaped by diseases, including malaria, yellow fever, polio, and tuberculosis. This lecture will discuss Tennessee’s reaction to ravaging disease, including settlement, treatment, prevention, and panic, while providing attendees with a healthy outlook about how far modern medicine has evolved.
